JRF vacancies in physics and materials science are project posts funded by agencies such as ANRF, BRNS, MeitY and DRDO. Most ask for a first-class postgraduate degree plus CSIR-UGC NET, GATE or JEST, pay ₹37,000 per month plus HRA in the 2026 advertisements above. Project Associate-I posts at CSIR labs such as CGCRI accept M.Sc. without NET, at ₹25,000 plus HRA, or ₹31,000 plus HRA with NET or GATE.
Research Associate and postdoctoral posts at IITs and CSIR labs need a PhD, sometimes with SCI publications. For assistant professor jobs in physics, IITs and private universities such as BITS Pilani expect a PhD and publications, while state college recruitments such as UPESSC follow the UGC minimum of a Master's degree plus NET/SET/SLET.

For most government-funded project JRF posts, yes. CSIR-NAL accepts CSIR-UGC NET (including Lectureship) or a valid GATE score, and DRDO-NPOL asks for valid NET or GATE for Physics. Project Associate posts at CSIR labs usually do not require it, but pay more if you have it.
The lab expects to fill the post but has not fixed the number. The interview still happens for that discipline; selection depends on project requirements on the day.
